As a follow up to the work the children did on planets, I invited the year groups to go into ‘combat’ – to show the relative size of each planet and the distance of each from the sun. This involved scaling down some truly enormous numbers and gave the children the opportunity to show their understanding of place value. Planets were moulded to the nearest mm and each sheet of loo paper equated to 10 million kilometres. We then went up to the rec and the year groups raced to ‘show’ their work first. Attempting to find the starting point, soggy paper and ‘lost’ planets ensued. Year 6 were victorious, in a closely fought (and highly competitive) battle!
